A young linguist named Martín (Fernando Álvarez Rebeil) travels to the rainforest of Veracruz, Mexico, to record and understand Zikril, a fictional indigenous language that is dying in the region. He discovers that the last two speakers, Isauro (José Manuel Poncelis) and Evaristo (Eligio Meléndez), have refused to speak to each other for 50 years due to a longstanding grudge over their forbidden love for each other. Martín enlists the help of Evaristo's granddaughter and builds a strong relationship with her, ultimately helping the two former friends reconcile in the afterlife, where they had long ago reunited as lovers.
