"The Man Who Saved the World" is a documentary film that tells the true story of Stanislav Petrov, a former lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Forces who prevented a potential nuclear catastrophe in 1983. The film follows Petrov as he recounts his experience on September 26, 1983, when computers at the Serpukhov-15 bunker reported incoming US intercontinental ballistic missiles. Sergey Shnyryov plays Petrov in the re-enactments, and the documentary features footage of Petrov's 2006 trip to the US with interpreter Galina, including visits to the UN and the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site.
