Sam Walden (Margaret Qualley) and Micah (Anthony Mackie) form a connection as they navigate a post-apocalyptic present where Earth's atmosphere has become toxic. The two flee in a helium balloon after discovering a new queen bee immune to the toxic air, but their journey is marred by personal tragedy and the harsh realities of survival. Ultimately, Sam decides to stay behind on Earth, adapting to its changed environment alongside the new queen bee, while Micah travels to the space station with his son.
