Born a fully grown black man in the Brazilian jungle, Macunaíma undergoes a magical transformation into a white man, embarking on an adventure-filled journey to the city of São Paulo where he becomes a dandy and falls in love with Ci, a revolutionary who dies in a tragic accident. After outwitting a ruthless industrialist, Macunaima returns to his village, only to find that his new knowledge and possessions are of little use amidst the simplicity of rural life. This 1969 Brazilian comedy film, directed by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, is an allegorical representation of the turmoil of Brazil's military coup, told through the misadventures of a man born to defy conventions and societal expectations.
