Diamonds of the Night

Two teenage boys flee from a moving train, shedding long black coats with "KL" painted on the back as they run, pursued by shouts and gunfire. The film employs little dialogue, interweaving their escape through forests, swamps, and rocky terrain with the memories, dreams, and hallucinations of the younger boy. He recalls exchanging shoes for food with the older boy, later imagining them in a deserted city street, walking down to Prague by train and tram, and repeatedly ringing an apartment doorbell. The boys are caught by elderly German-speaking men and detained in a beer hall, where they sit silently while the old men drink, eat, sing, and dance. Eventually, two gunshots are heard, leaving the outcome of their fate ambiguous.
