War correspondent Michael Ware's seven-year journey in Iraq takes him into the darkest recesses of the conflict and his own humanity. Beginning just prior to the American invasion in February 2003, Ware embeds himself with Kurdish fighters, captures graphic footage of violence and its aftermath, and forms relationships with insurgents who share recordings of their military operations with him. Through this unprecedented access, Ware gains a deeper understanding of the human soul behind the suicide bombings and the insurgency, but also grapples with guilt, fear, and the complexities of war.
