In 19th century Oregon, grieving man Parson Henry (David Zellner) is hired by eccentric pioneer Samuel Alabaster (Robert Pattinson) to officiate his marriage to Penelope, but what follows is a perilous journey across the American frontier with a mini horse named Butterscotch. Along the way, they're pursued by Rufus Cornell, who attempts to kill Samuel before being shot and killed by Zachariah Running Bear; later, Rufus returns and tries to take Penelope as his wife. Henry helps Samuel rescue Penelope from Rufus, only for her to reject him, leading to a tragic outcome. The film's tone veers between humor and darkness, with the Zellner brothers' direction and Robert Pattinson's performance receiving praise from critics.
