In the early 1900s, a peasant named Emiliano Zapata rises up as a leader in the Mexican Revolution against dictator Porfirio Díaz, who supported the elites that monopolized land and water resources for sugarcane production. With his brother Eufemio by his side, Zapata warily cooperates with candidate Francisco Madero, who made vague promises about land reform, but ultimately fails to deliver. As the film unfolds, Zapata remains guided by his desire to return the peasants' recently robbed lands while forsaking personal interests, even in the face of betrayal and loss, ultimately leading to his tragic demise.
