In 19th-century France, a young girl named Teresa arrives at a female boarding school where strict headmistress Mrs. Fourneau (Lilli Palmer) tyrannically rules over her students, including Luis (John Moulder-Brown), her weak and troubled son. As Teresa begins to settle in, she notices strange occurrences and is bullied by her peers, while also developing a romance with Luis. However, when one of the girls goes missing, Irene Tupan's (Mary Maude) alleged mistake for not keeping track of keys sets off a chain of events that leads to a dark and sinister fate for Teresa and eventually, Irene, at the hands of Señora Fourneau.
