Bartleby Gaines (Justin Long) creates his own institution of higher learning, the South Harmon Institute of Technology, after being rejected by every college he applies to. He enlists the help of his friends Rory Thayer, Darryl "Hands" Holloway, and Glen, as well as Sherman Schrader III, who helps him build a website to aid in the school's legitimacy. The school gains popularity and attracts students from all over, including Bartleby's love interest Monica Moreland, but ultimately faces challenges when its true nature is exposed. In the end, Bartleby's unconventional approach to education is recognized by the State Board of Education, granting his school a one-year probationary accreditation.
