In 1950s America, a small-market radio program in rural Arkansas discovers a drifter named Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes, who becomes an overnight sensation after playing his guitar and speaking to the audience while incarcerated. A producer, Marcia Jeffries, promotes him to national television, where he uses his charisma to critique local politicians and gain massive popularity. However, as his fame and influence grow, so does his ego, leading to a rise and fall that will leave both himself and those around him reeling. In the end, the truth about Lonesome Rhodes is revealed, leaving him with nothing but the applause machine he created for himself.
