The 1987 film "Flowers in the Attic" tells the story of four siblings - Chris, Cathy, Cory, and Carrie - who are kept hidden in a room just below the attic of their grandparents' mansion by their abusive mother Corrine Dollanganger. Corrine's mother Olivia Foxworth takes in her daughter and grandchildren under the condition that the children will be sequestered in the locked room, with access only to the attic via a secret stairway, as part of a plan to secure her inheritance when her husband dies. As time passes, the siblings struggle with their confinement, facing cruelty, neglect, and even attempted murder at the hands of their grandmother, who becomes increasingly obsessed with the incestuous relationship between Chris and Cathy, and ultimately leads to their escape from the mansion.
