On his ninth birthday, a New York City boy named Omri receives an old cupboard from his 14-year-old brother Gillon and a toy Native American figure from his best friend Patrick. The next morning, he discovers that the toy has magically come to life as an 18th-century Iroquois man named Little Bear who was fighting in the French and Indian War on the side of the British. As Omri learns more about Little Bear's culture and struggles with understanding his own childhood, a series of events unfolds that lead to a heartwarming yet bittersweet conclusion as Omri must decide whether to return Little Bear to his own time or keep him in his life forever.
