George C. Scott plays Jake VanDorn, a devout Calvinist businessman and single father from Grand Rapids, Michigan, whose teenage daughter Kristen vanishes during a church-sponsored trip to California. Horrified by shocking evidence of Kristen's involvement in the pornography industry, VanDorn hires a sleazy private investigator Andy Mast (Peter Boyle) to track her down. As they delve into the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles, their rigid moral differences clash with the exploitative world they encounter, leading them on a desperate search for Kristen, who eventually reveals she fled voluntarily, rejecting her stifling upbringing for a world where she felt seen.
