Brontë Mitchell (Andie MacDowell) enters into a marriage of convenience with Georges Fauré (Gérard Depardieu), an undocumented immigrant from France, so he can stay in the US and rent her dream apartment. As they try to maintain their charade, they clash over their contrasting lifestyles, but ultimately develop feelings for each other despite their initial reluctance. With Brontë's attorney advising her to reveal the truth and risk deportation, Georges confesses their fake marriage and asks Brontë to join him in France, leading them to reevaluate their relationship on a last-minute trip together.
