Bette Davis stars as Janet Frobisher, a successful mystery novelist living in an isolated home in Northern England. Her life is turned upside down when her estranged husband unexpectedly returns, and she finds herself trapped in a web of deception and murder with the help of Dr. Henderson (Emlyn Williams), Larry Stevens (Anthony Steel), George Bates (Gary Merrill), and nosy vet Chris Dale (Barbara Murray).
