Wildlife photographer Pickett Smith (Sam Elliott) is hired by Jason Crockett (Ray Milland), a wealthy and influential Southern family patriarch who has invited his family to spend their birthday on his island estate. As Pickett explores the property, he notices signs of pollution and suspects that Jason's abuse of the local ecology may be responsible for the increasingly aggressive behavior of the swamp creatures, including snakes, birds, leeches, lizards, and butterflies.
