In 1960s Philadelphia, two teenage boys, Birdy (Matthew Modine) and Al Columbato (Nicolas Cage), are seriously affected by the Vietnam War. Birdy believes he is a bird and has been sent to a mental hospital, where his friend Al visits him in an attempt to help him recover from his experiences.
