In Western Australia, two young men, Archy Hamilton and Frank Dunne, enlist in the Australian Army during World War I. They travel together to Perth, where they both decide to join up despite their lack of enthusiasm for fighting for the British Empire. As they train in Cairo, they meet again before being sent to the Gallipoli peninsula as infantry, where they face hardships and ultimately participate in the ill-fated charge at the Nek.
