Matthew Broderick stars as Private Eugene Morris Jerome, a Jewish teenager drafted into the United States Army during World War II, who sets three goals for himself: lose his virginity, survive the war, and become a writer. He keeps a journal to record his impressions of his fellow draftees, including Technical Sergeant Merwin J. Toomey (Christopher Walken), a wounded veteran with a steel plate in his head. As Jerome navigates basic training at Keesler Field in Biloxi, Mississippi, he faces challenges from his fellow recruits and the strict disciplinarian, Toomey, who imposes arbitrary rules and punishments.
