Kristen Wiig stars as Imogene, a failed New York playwright who stages a suicide attempt to win back her ex, only to wind up in the custody of her gambling-addict mother, played by Annette Bening. After a series of misadventures, including a stint with Lee, a boarder and friend who helps her discover her talent, Imogene finds inspiration for a play that leads to a surprising twist: she writes about her own life, starring Julia Stiles.
