J.B. Ball (Edward Arnold), a rich financier, throws his wife's expensive sable coat off a roof onto poor hard-working girl Mary Smith (Jean Arthur). The incident sets off a chain of events as Mary receives offers from people eager to cash in on her notoriety and becomes the object of speculation among the elite at a luxury hotel owned by Mr. Louis Louis (Luis Alberni). As J.B.'s wife goes to Florida, Mary falls in love with his son John Jr. (Ray Milland), who is working anonymously at an automat, and helps him find a way to save J.B's failing firm by providing false information about the steel market, leading to a surprising turn of events.
