Doug Glatt, a polite, kind-hearted, but dim-witted bouncer at a local dive bar in the fictional hockey crazed town of Orangetown, Massachusetts, discovers he has a talent for brawling after stepping in to defend his friend from a homophobic slur during a minor league hockey game. He's offered a tryout to be an enforcer on his hometown team despite being a hilariously bad skater, and trains relentlessly to bring his skills up to par, earning the nickname "Doug the Thug" among fans and teammates. As he gains success, Doug becomes popular, but also faces opposition from legendary veteran enforcer Ross "The Boss" Rhea, who sees him as a worthy opponent and ultimately meets him on the ice in a fierce battle that leaves Rhea incapacitated.
