A young black woman, Zora Matthews (Nia Long), discovers that her father was a sperm donor and is white, leading to a complicated family dynamic. Her mother, Sarah (Whoopi Goldberg), had used donor sperm to get pregnant with Zora because she couldn't conceive with her husband, who Zora believed was her father. When Zora confronts her mother about the truth, she also meets her biological father, Hal Jackson (Ted Danson), a flamboyant and eccentric white man who has no sympathy for her situation.
