In 1962 Baltimore, a plump teenager named Tracy Turnblad auditions for the local television dance show "The Corny Collins Show" and lands a prime spot, becoming an unlikely star in the process. As Tracy pursues stardom, she rallies against racial segregation that has been a staple of the show, sparking a journey of self-discovery and activism that ultimately leads to integration and equality. Through her newfound fame and friendships, Tracy faces challenges and triumphs in this musical romantic comedy set in 1960s Baltimore.
