Francine Lawrence, a 16-year-old tomboy, meets surfer Moondoggie (James Darren) at the beach and becomes infatuated with him. She soon discovers her passion for surfing and is adopted by his group of friends, including The Big Kahuna (Cliff Robertson). As she navigates her feelings for Moondoggie, Gidget (Sandra Dee), a nickname given to her by the surfer gang, finds herself caught between her desire for romance and her friendship with Moondoggie.
