A stage director, Adam Driver's Charlie Barber, and his actress wife, Scarlett Johansson's Nicole Barber, struggle through a coast-to-coast divorce that pushes them to their personal extremes. The couple is experiencing marital troubles and sees a mediator, who suggests they each write down what they love about one another, but Nicole is too embarrassed to read hers aloud.
