In 1981, Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill party clown and aspiring stand-up comedian, descends into moral nihilism as he suffers from a neurological disorder that causes uncontrollable laughing fits. Driven by poverty, neglect, and societal indifference, Arthur's world unravels after a series of events including being attacked on the job, losing his medication, and witnessing the tragic death of two men at the hands of an entitled billionaire. As his mental state deteriorates, Arthur's clown persona becomes a symbol of resistance against the oppressive system that has failed him, leading to a violent countercultural revolution in decaying Gotham City.
