The Two Popes

The film follows Pope Benedict XVI, played by Anthony Hopkins, as he summons his harshest critic and future successor, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, played by Jonathan Pryce, to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. The two men meet in the Palace of Castel Gandolfo, the Pope's summer residence, and engage in a debate about the roles of God and the Church. Bergoglio recounts his early life and path into the church, while Benedict confides in him about his own intentions to abdicate the papacy. The two men eventually find common ground, and Benedict gives Bergoglio absolution, setting the stage for his eventual election as Pope Francis.
