In 1931, outside Kansas City, Missouri, wealthy heiress Barbara Blandish (Kim Darby) is robbed and kidnapped by the titular Grissom Gang, led by Slim Grissom (Scott Wilson), a mentally handicapped thug who falls in love with her. Private investigator Dave Fenner (Robert Lansing) is hired to rescue Barbara, and as he gets closer to the truth, Slim's feelings for her become a crucial factor in the gang's plan.
