Willi Schulze (Dieter Hallervorden), a car mechanic, gets into a series of misadventures after discovering a fatal accident can be prevented. After a car crash, he loses his memory and is mistaken for an American election expert, Willy Schneider. As Schneider, Willi becomes embroiled in a political campaign, but his true identity is eventually revealed. With the help of his former orphanage friend, Paul, Willi outwits his opponents and exposes the truth about the election, ultimately helping the voters.
