Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze) and Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes), two drag queens from New York City, win a trip to Hollywood to compete in a national pageant after tying for the win in a local contest. They agree to take Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Leguizamo), a drag novice, under their wing, and the three embark on a madcap road trip across America to make it to Los Angeles in time. Along the way, they encounter various challenges, including run-ins with homophobes and a hick sheriff who mistakes Vida for a man.
