In 2032, cybernetic operative Batou is teamed with Togusa to investigate a series of deaths due to malfunctioning gynoids, which Batou himself neutralized. The most recent gynoid's remains show they all contained an illegal "ghost" file, which Batou's own e-brain was hacked to reveal. As Batou delves deeper, he uncovers a sinister plot by LOCUS SOLUS to duplicate human consciousnesses into the gynoids, creating lifelike "ghosts" to make them more realistic. With the help of Major Motoko Kusanagi, Batou fights to unravel the truth behind the gynoids and their human "ghosts," leading to a confrontation with Kim, a former soldier-turned-hacker with ties to the company.
