The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby

The 1947 film "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby" tells the story of a fatherless boy, Nicholas Nickleby, who, along with his mother and younger sister Kate, travel to London to seek help from their wealthy but cold-hearted uncle Ralph, a money-lender. Nicholas meets his new employer, the sadistic Mr. and Mrs. Squeers, who run a remote boy's school, Dotheboys Hall, where they physically and emotionally abuse their young charges. After Nicholas rebels and escapes, he takes lodgings with Newman Noggs, Ralph Nickleby's clerk, and eventually finds employment with the benevolent twin brothers Cheeryble, who provide him a cottage for himself and Smike, a young man he has befriended.
