The film is divided into five segments, each depicting a stage in the life of a novice Buddhist monk and his older teacher. The story unfolds simply, with the segments roughly 10 to 20 years apart, and the action of each taking place during the season in question. The segments follow the life of a young Buddhist apprentice, his master, and later the aging master, as they navigate the challenges of life, death, and the Buddhist teachings.
