In 1800s England, a well-meaning but selfish young woman named Emma Woodhouse meddles in the love lives of her friends, including her friend Harriet Smith, who she persuades to decline a marriage proposal from a respectable farmer, Robert Martin. Along the way, Emma finds herself drawn to her friend George Knightley, a close friend of the family and owner of nearby Donwell Abbey, and also to Frank Churchill, a charming visitor to the area. As Emma navigates her matchmaking efforts and her own feelings, she must confront her own biases and learn to let others find their own happiness. In the end, Emma and George Knightley find love, as do Harriet and Robert Martin.
