Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence

Major Jack Celliers (David Bowie), a British prisoner of war, is convicted of rebellion and sent to a Japanese prison camp. Interned alongside him is Colonel John Lawrence (Tom Conti), a prisoner fluent in Japanese who attempts to mediate between the harsh Captain Yonoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto) and the abrasive spokesman Group Captain Hicksley (Jack Thompson). As the two men from different backgrounds clash, they share their personal demons, including Celliers' shameful betrayal of his brother, and form an unlikely bond that challenges Yonoi's adherence to the bushido code.
