In 1970 Los Angeles, private investigator Larry "Doc" Sportello is hired by his ex-girlfriend Shasta Fay Hepworth to help prevent her new lover, Michael Z. Wolfmann, from being abducted by his wife and her lover. As Doc delves deeper into the case, he becomes entangled in a complex web of crime and corruption involving heroin smugglers, loan sharks, and corrupt law enforcement. With the help of his attorney Sauncho Smilax, Doc must navigate the treacherous underworld of 1970s Los Angeles to uncover the truth behind Wolfmann's disappearance and the sinister forces driving it.
