Le Silence de la mer

In occupied France, a retired man and his adult niece refuse to acknowledge a German lieutenant, Werner von Ebrennac, who is billetted in their house. The officer, a composer, engages them in brief conversations about his life, hopes for France's future, and his admiration for French culture, which he believes will benefit everyone if Germany is welcomed into the country. The niece remains silent, but her growing feelings are revealed through subtle expressions, while Werner's words convey a complex mix of loyalty to Hitler and growing disillusionment with the Nazi occupation. The uncle eventually invites Werner in, leading to a poignant moment of connection between the two.
