In the early morning of April 9, 1940, the Danish army is alerted that the Germans have crossed the border, and Denmark is now at war with Europe's strongest army. A Danish bicycle infantry company, led by Second Lieutenant Sand (Pilou Asbæk), is sent to slow down the German advance, but they are quickly overwhelmed by superior forces. The company retreats to Haderslev, where they engage in fierce battles with the Germans. The film depicts the harrowing events of the day, told through the perspectives of the few surviving veterans who fought in the battle.
