Sunset Shimmer, concerned about her friends' magical abilities, investigates the cause of Rainbow Dash's transformation during a pep rally, leading to a series of events that threaten to destroy the parallel world. Meanwhile, Twilight Sparkle, a student from Crystal Prep Academy, discovers the magical activity around Canterlot High and builds a device to detect and contain the magic. As the games unfold, Sunset and her friends work together to save their classmates and ultimately win the competition.
