In a modest market garden in the South of France, a woman raises her seven children alone, working hard alongside hired labour to survive under the harsh conditions of the farm owner, who is also her lover and the father of the children. This authoritarian figure exploits the family, but the mother's unconditional love is the only thing that keeps them together. As the family struggles to survive, the mother's desire for a better life for her children remains a constant.
