Wing Chun master Ip Man and his family move to Hong Kong in 1949 after escaping from Japanese-occupied Foshan. In 1950, Ip attempts to open a school to propagate his art, struggling to attract students due to his lack of reputation in the city. A young man named Wong Shun Leung appears, is defeated by Ip, and later brings more disciples to help the school thrive. As Ip's school gains popularity, he faces rivalry from other practitioners, including local master Hung Chun-nam and British boxing champion Taylor "The Twister" Miller, leading to confrontations that threaten the fragile balance of power in post-war Hong Kong.
