In a dystopian future where advanced nations have created humanoid robots to fulfill various roles in society, an 11-year-old prototype mecha child named David is given to a family in Madison, New Jersey, who are expecting their son back from suspended animation. As David grows and experiences love, he becomes the center of his adoptive parents' lives, but his unique programming and desire for humanity lead to a series of unexpected circumstances that ultimately threaten his existence. With the help of a prostitute mecha and a kind-hearted teddy bear named Teddy, David sets out on a journey to find the Blue Fairy, who is said to have the power to make him a "real boy." Along the way, he encounters danger, loss, and heartbreak, but ultimately finds a sense of belonging and love that changes his existence forever.
