In 1215, during the First Barons' War, King John of England laid siege to Rochester Castle, a strategic stronghold that had fallen into the hands of the barons who revolted against him. Thomas Marshall (James Purefoy), a Templar knight, joins forces with Baron William d'Aubigny and Archbishop Langton to defend the castle against King John's army. The defenders hold off the initial Danish assault but face increasingly dire circumstances as they starve and are eventually betrayed by one of their own. Marshall leads a final stand against the Danes, and after the rebels' victory, he meets Prince Louis and is freed from his Templar vows, riding off with Lady Isabel (Kate Mara) into a new era for England.
