Yi dai zong shi

The film is a 2013 martial arts drama directed and written by Wong Kar-wai, based on the life story of Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man. The movie follows Ip Man, played by Tony Leung, as he reflects on his life and battles various combatants during a rainstorm in Foshan. Ip's peaceful existence is disrupted by the arrival of Gong Yutian, the Wudangquan martial arts grandmaster from northern China, who announces that he has appointed Ip as the heir to the South. A fight erupts, but it turns out to be an exchange of philosophical ideas, with Ip eventually breaking a flat-cake to win Gong Yutian's respect. Gong Er, Gong Yutian's daughter played by Zhang Ziyi, sets out to regain her family's honor by challenging Ip Man, and the two engage in an intense fight that concludes with Ip's victory. The film is set against the backdrop of China's turbulent times, including the fall of the Manchu dynasty, the establishment of the Republic of China, and the Japanese invasion.
