Lucía, a young waitress in Madrid, seeks refuge on a quiet Mediterranean island after the loss of her longtime boyfriend. She begins to piece together the dark corners of her past relationship, as she finds an empty apartment and flees, leaving behind a suicide note. Meanwhile, six years earlier, Lorenzo, a writer, has an extramarital affair with a married woman, Elena, resulting in an illegitimate son, Luna, whom Lorenzo keeps secret from his girlfriend, Lucía.
