Gukjesijang

Ode to My Father tells the story of Duk-soo (Hwang Jung-min), a man whose life is shaped by a significant event from his childhood. During the Hungnam evacuation of 1950 in the Korean War, Duk-soo loses his sister, which leads to him becoming the head of his family at a young age. As he grows up, he travels to Germany with his best friend Dal-goo to work in a coal mine, where he falls in love with a fellow Korean, Yeong-ja, and starts a family. He later enlists in the Korean army in Vietnam to fulfill his sister's wish and eventually discovers that he has a long-lost sister, Mak-soon, who was adopted by an American family during the Korean War.
