A Brighter Summer Day follows Hsiao Si'r (Chang Chen), a junior high student in 1959 Taipei, as he navigates first love, friendships, and injustices growing up in 1960s Taiwan. Si'r and his best friend Cat spy on an actress during a film shoot, leading to encounters with rival gangs, including the Little Park Boys and the 217s. As Si'r becomes entangled with the gangs, he also meets Ming, a classmate who becomes his friend and potential love interest. The film chronicles Si'r's journey through adolescence, marked by violence, tragedy, and ultimately, a devastating crime that changes his life forever.
