In 1936, Toni Kurz and Andreas "Andi" Hinterstoisser, two German climbers from childhood friends from Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, compete to be the first to successfully climb the North Face of the Eiger, a deadly Alpine face. Luise Fellner, a novice journalist, covers the story, along with Willy Angerer and Edi Rainer, an Austrian team. Toni and Andi's ascent ends in tragedy, with Edi and Willy's deaths, and Toni's eventual rescue, but not before he passes away.
